Radiesse®

Introduction

Radiesse, a synthetic material is a FDA approved dermal filler which is used in the nonsurgical facial rejuvenation treatment for correction of facial wrinkles and folds, and to fill areas of facial wasting, or fat loss which results in patients with AIDS.

How Radiesse works?

Radiesse is made up of synthetic calcium hydroxylapatite particles suspended in a gel. Calcium hydroxylapatite, a biocompatible, biodegradable material is similar to a substance found naturally in bones and has long been used in medical products. When injected below the surface of the skin, the gel fills and fattens wrinkles or folds and stimulates the growth of new collagen. Calcium particles disappear over time. Results improve over 2 to 3 months due to collagen growth and may last for 12 to 18 months.

Uses of Radiesse

Radiesse can be used to treat wrinkle and folds around the nose and mouth, including nasolabial folds by adding volume under the skin. It restores youthful fullness to the face. In addition to treatment of wrinkles, it is also used for marionette lines, frown lines and to augment cheeks.

Procedure

Radiesse injection techniques are usually administered and performed in a doctor’s office. The patient consent is obtained before the treatment. It is performed using local or topical anesthetic as required. The patient is positioned in an upright or semi-upright position. The skin is prepared by cleansing and marking the areas to be treated. The Radiesse filler is then injected beneath the skin using a fine needle and gently massaged to ensure even placement. Following the treatment, the marks are washed off and ice pack is applied to the treated area.

The possible side effects of Radiesse are redness, swelling, bruising, nodules, or small knots of tissue under the skin, granulomas (small bump), pain and itching at the injection site. These side effects are usually mild and resolve within a few days.
